What is a Footstone?

Did you know there are footstones in addition to headstones? A footstone is a grave marker placed at the foot of a burial plot, directly opposite the headstone, which typically serves as the primary marker. Traditionally made of stone, modern footstones are often crafted from concrete or metal, usually bronze, in the form of a cast plate, sometimes set in concrete. While some footstones simply mark the boundary of the grave, they more commonly include additional details about the deceased. Most often, a footstone bears the initials of the person buried there.
