What is Döstädning?

Swedish death cleaning, or döstädning, is a Scandinavian practice of decluttering in later life to ease the burden on loved ones after passing. While the name may sound morbid, the philosophy behind it isn't. Popularized by Margareta Magnusson in "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning," this method encourages sorting through belongings with both practicality and sentimentality in mind.

Unlike other decluttering trends, döstädning isn't just about personal joy—it considers those left behind. The process involves donating or gifting meaningful items, keeping only essentials, and even creating a "death cleaning" box filled with cherished memories. More than tidying up, Swedish death cleaning is an act of love. It fosters conversations about mortality, encourages reflection, and ensures that one's legacy isn’t in possessions but in the memories and kindness left behind.

Is this something you might consider doing as you get older??
