How to Clean a Gravestone
Cleaning gravestones can be a rewarding experience: it’s a great workout and a chance to spend time outdoors. If you ever feel inspired to tidy up some markers in your local cemetery, here’s some helpful information to get you started.
Marble Headstones
Supplies: Clean water, Soft-bristle brush, Ammonium hydroxide detergent or household ammonia (1 oz per gallon of water), Gloves, sponge, spray bottle.
Wet the stone thoroughly with clean water. Dilute ammonium hydroxide (1:4 ratio) for light-colored stones. Test in a small area first, then gently apply the solution with a soft brush, using circular motions. Then wash away all residue with fresh water. Keep the stone wet throughout the process.
Granite, Sandstone, & Slate Headstones
Supplies: Clean water, Soft-bristle brush, Non-ionic detergent (1 oz per gallon of water), Biocidal cleaning solution, Gloves, sponge, spray bottle.
Wet the entire surface with clean water. Combine non-ionic detergent with water (1 oz per 5 gallons), then gently spread the solution with a soft brush. Use a circular motion, avoiding any cracks or flakes. Flush with fresh water.
For all stone types, use only soft brushes and neutral pH cleaners. Test cleaning solutions on a small area first, and rinse thoroughly to remove all cleaning residue. DO NOT use bleach, acidic cleaners, or high-pressure washing, along with scraping or sandblastngi the surface. Avoid overcleaning- frequent cleaning can cause deterioration. By following these guidelines, you can help preserve the beauty and integrity of grave markers for generations to come.
