What is a Chest Tomb?

Chest tombs first appeared in Europe. These tombs looked like a chest or trunk with an effigy of the deceased resting on top. Chest tombs were very popular in 19th century American cemeteries, but they were constructed without an effigy, and they were also called false crypts since the coffin was buried underneath the chest tomb instead of inside it.
